 Tobacco Cessation Ideas & Resources
If you’re a smoker, maybe you’ve tried to stop once or twice or maybe you’ve tried many times. If that is the case, you are not alone. Many people try a few times before they are successful. That doesn’t mean you won’t succeed on your first try; many people do. Some people quit using the “cold turkey” strategy where you quit without any support or nicotine replacement products or even by cutting down. Others find the cold turkey strategy too severe.  Understanding your physical addiction to nicotine as well as the emotional, social and behavioral aspects of your tobacco behavior can help you in your ongoing process of quitting. And many resources are available now to help you through that process.

  • Talk to your healthcare provider about nicotine replacement products like nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges and whether they recommend these products for you.
  • Ask your provider about if prescription medications, like Chantix and Zyban, are right for you.
  • Seek out support. Cessation support now comes in many ways:  telephone, website, and local smoking cessation classes. These resources will help guide you through your quit and help you learn strategies to employ when those cravings hit.
